In these extremely commercial days, publishers are less and less likely to want to publish books at risk, however worthy the project in question. Sadly, marketing considerations often mean that mainstream publishers have to justify committing resources to projects and can no longer justify risking large sums of capital on what are often viewed as "minority interest" manuscripts. This leaves the author of such works with a difficult dilemma: either to pay for publication or to try and struggle to publish and distribute the work oneself. Now there is a third way. At Moose Manuscripts we recognise that the production of a book represents a considerable investment. Whereas conventional printers and typesetters usually demand payment up front for the entirety of a project, we are willing to talk to you about phased payments and spreading the burden with one of our book production plans. We specialise in the production of finished artwork for authors who are considering self publication as an option: we can edit your work to a common standard, prepare your work for the press, talk to you about marketing the work, scan in illustrations to make them into computer files, and generally advise on marketing your work when published. We are not vanity publishers: we will not lead you on by telling you your book is saleable or even publishable when it is not. We may be able to suggest how you can sell and market your finished work, but that is not our main concern. If, at the end of the day, you decide your book should be published even without the possibility of recouping the layout for print, typesetting etc., we can help you to get it through the press. After that, it is largely up to you. We can accept artwork and mss. in a variety of formats. Whereas one customer may need the full process of converting a typescript done on a manual typewriter into finished artwork, incorporating illustrations, and detailed advice on format and pagination, another may have already "designed" what they want their finished book to look like, and only need our help in actually executing the planned design. Because we have extremely good links with the print industry and allied professionals, if we can't help you ourselves we are usually happy to point you in the right direction. We aim to provide a high quality personal service which gives the author the maximum flexibility and ensures that publication options are fully discussed prior to staring work on a project. |
